Nick retires after crash with Sebastien Buemi.

Conditions were cool, just 14 °C, and a few drops of rain were falling, as the race in Germany’s Eifel region got underway. Nick was unlucky at his home GP and had to retire his Lotus Renault on the ninth lap after a crash with Buemi.

Nick didn’t get away to a good start, bumping momentarily into Paul Di Resta in the Mercedes Arena. He dropped down to 23rd place as a result and had to claw his way back up the field.

Finally, in a scrap for P15 on the ninth lap, Nick initiated an overtaking manoeuvre against Sebastien Buemi. However, the Swiss driver forced Nick onto the grass just before the NGK chicane, and he lost control of his car, leading to his retirement.

Nick’s view of events: “Sebastien shut the door on the left, which was okay, but when I’m on his right, he can’t then come over and force me onto the grass. I had nowhere to go. It was just ridiculous. This was at high speed, 300 km/h, bad idea. He must have seen me, otherwise he would not have first moved over to the left.”

Regarding the situation at the start, Nick told us: “My front wheels locked up on turn three, and I just skidded into di Resta.”

Victory in the race went to Lewis Hamilton ahead of Fernando Alonso and Mark Webber. Formula One continues next weekend with the Hungarian Grand Prix .
