Due to trouble with engine and gearbox of the car Nick’s Gemballa Team was not able to take part in the final top-40 qualifying of the Nürburgring 24-hours race and thus had to start the race from 39th position.

In the qualifying runs for the Nürburgring 24-hour race - which got under way at 4 p.m. on Saturday - Nick and his Gemballa Racing Team did not exactly have their lucky day.  The first set of qualification runs (Q1) still resulted in 9th place for the Gemballa Team, though in the course of this session the McLaren MP4 12C developed engine trouble, forcing the team to replace the engine.

During warm-up new problems occurred so that the mechanics were getting ready to fit a third engine. But then a McLaren engineer managed to spot the fault so that the engine could stay in the car. But by then the team had already removed the gearbox so that the car could not be got ready in time for the Top-40 qualifying.

This resulted in the Gemballa Racing McLaren, driven by Nick, Sascha Bert, Hendrik Vieth, and Klaus Ludwig having to tackle the 24-hours from 39th position.
