It has become something of a tradition for Nick to organise a get-together for his fans in the run-up to Christmas in his home town of Mönchengladbach.

This year, there was a change of venue, with the party being held in the Sportsbar at Borussia Park.

Nick and his fans were joined by some celebrity guests at the Saturday evening function, including Tobias Levels who plays for Borussia Mönchengladbach. As always, the programme of events included video reviews of the past season, interviews with Nick, a charity tombola and – as was only right in the setting of the local football stadium – a penalty competition.

Obviously, one topic on everyone’s mind was Nicks’ future, but he was unable to reveal too much to his fans. “We are still involved in discussions,” he said cagily. “But until we have something in writing, we can’t be too specific.” As soon as the decision is reached on which team Nick will be driving for next season, he will be letting his fans know about it here on his official website first.

The website was also a topic of conversation at the party, especially as it had received a complete overhaul at the start of the year, incorporating plenty of new features. “I wanted to get involved personally,” said Nick. “At the beginning, it was a lot of work getting everything up and running, but I’m well satisfied with the result. I plan to keep it up next year too.”

During 2009, around 250 reports, Q-TV video sequences and Nick’s own blog about his performance over the season were posted on the site. “Before I became a professional driver, I was also a fan, so I know how keen people for information about what’s going on in the sport,” said Nick. “That’s why I kept up my blog through thick and thin. It’s really great to see how popular the site has become and to read all the comments from fans, either congratulating me or willing me on to better things. So for that reason, I’d like to thank everyone for giving me such massive support.”

Particularly impressive was the response to the helmet design competition on the site. Around 10,000 entries were submitted by fans. The winning design by Tamas Simon from Hungary immediately caught Nick’s eye: “I liked it from the moment I first saw it. I think we may well do something similar next year too. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience, and what’s more, it was all for a good cause.” The helmet was auctioned as part of the RTL charity telethon in aid of children in need.

In the next chapter of Nick’s blog here on www.nickheidfeld.com, he will be writing up his own report of the Christmas celebration with his fans.
